The opening weekend of the college football season has been reserved for home dates with some cupcakes for Texas A&M (vs. Northwestern State) and Clemson (vs. Furman) but things will be taken up a notch significantly for both programs the following weekend as the Tigers will travel to College Station to face the Aggies for Week 2.

The game provides Jimbo Fisher his first real test as head coach at A&M and will show just how prepared the Aggie offensive line is to face Clemson’s defensive line — which features an entire front four that was just named First-Team All-ACC selections.

During a recent appearance on ESPN’s “College Football Live,” Clemson coach Dabo Swinney was asked about his team’s upcoming trip to Texas. As you might expect, Dabo found a clever way to rope Fisher into the conversation.

“Yeah, I can’t shake him. I can’t get rid of him, man, I’m telling you. I’m sure that will be a fun pregame conversation when we get a chance to visit out there,” Swinney said on the show. “But I’m happy for Jimbo. I mean, he’s excited about the opportunity to go to Texas A&M. I don’t have any doubt he’s going to do a great job. I’ve been out there one time, we got destroyed (back in 2004). So, hopefully, we can give a little better effort this time around and I’m sure it will be a great ball game.”

The game Swinney referenced in his comments came before he was the head coach of the program. Back in 2004, Swinney was receivers coach for Clemson. The Tigers lost that game 27-6 but got revenge the following year at home by beating the Aggies 25-24 inside the ACC’s version of Death Valley. The 2005 game was the last contest between the two programs.

As for the rivalry between Fisher and Swinney, the series is tied at four games apiece when the two have met as head coaches. Despite the tie, Swinney is on a role in the series, winning the last three games — including a 31-14 victory over Fisher’s last Florida State team last season.

Clemson travels to College Station on Saturday, Sept. 8. The game is set to kickoff at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT and will air on ESPN.
