Entering the 2019 season, most of the SEC QB talk centers around Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Georgia’s Jake Fromm. The two seasoned veterans will be leading their teams in competing for an SEC Championship. The two largely figure to be first-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, too.

However, if there’s one QB who may have the most upside stock-wise, it’s Texas A&M Kellen Mond. Mond is entering year three at Texas A&M and year two under QB guru Jimbo Fisher. He made huge strides last year in Fisher’s system, and there’s a chance he could jump into the Tagovailoa and Fromm discussion.

Of course, Mond will have to prove it against college football’s blue bloods Alabama and Clemson, among others, but he’ll certainly have that opportunity.

On Sirius XM, Jacob Hester and Cole Cubelic asked former NFL QB and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky who could join Tagovailoa and Fromm in the elite category. He gave three reasons why Mond is the guy.

“Kellen Mond for three reasons,” Orlovsky explained. “One — who is coach is. Everyone knows how incredible Jimbo Fisher is for QBs, and the reason he is is it’s so important … Jimbo coaches the hard way. It’s not the, ‘Hey, let’s just line up and figure out what the defense is doing, and I’ll tell you the play so we’re in a really good situation all the time.’ You know, Jimbo coaches the hard way with QBs in always forcing them to know what to do with the football every single play and every single situation.

“Two — he’s got all three of his guys coming back on the outside. His receivers are really good — Quartney Davis, Jhamon Ausbon and Kendrick Rogers. So, those three guys are going to be freak weapons for him.

“But the third is reason is QBs … when you get taught and you’re trying to figure out how to play the position — a lot of times for guys it’s blurry until you really get somebody who understands how to teach,” Orlovsky continued. “And then, you get the clear vision. That’s what happened with Mond last year. You watched him play and you’re like, ‘Oh, he’s figuring it out. Oh, he’s understanding where to go with the football. Oh, he knows how to beat that blitz.’ Once that happens for a QB one time, it’s clarity. And I think you’re going to see a huge step forward for Kellen. I could see him getting into that conversation that is one of the best QBs in college football, let alone the SEC.”
