Rumors continue to swirl around Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin as he takes his Aggies into battle on Saturday for what many believe will be the last time. Some even have the 53-year-old headed out west to UCLA.

Regardless of Sumlin’s future, he’s had his moments in College Station. Most were in his first season at the helm in 2012 as the Aggies entered into the SEC for the first time. However, it appears as though that big-bang entrance could lead to his ultimate demise. It’s pretty much been downhill after that.

Here are 10 of Sumlin’s biggest moments while at Texas A&M:

1. Sumlin names Johnny Manziel his starting QB: Yeah, that was a pretty good move, probably his best in six years at Texas A&M. Problem is, there was nowhere to go but down after that. Sumlin reached his pinnacle in his first season. It’s always better to start slow and build your way up.

2. Texas A&M beats Alabama 29-24: In his first meeting (2012) with Alabama, Sumlin’s Aggies knocked off the No. 1 Tide. Manziel threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns on 24-for-31 passing in addition to running for 92 yards on 18 carries, and the legend was born. It would be Sumlin’s only victory over Alabama in six seasons.

3. Texas A&M wins the Cotton Bowl: Following that big splash season of 2012, the Aggies manhandled No. 11 Oklahoma 41-13 in the Cotton Bowl, as Manziel went wild — throwing for 287 yards and two touchdowns on 22-for-34 passing in addition to running for 229 yards and two more scores.

4. Top 5 ranking: It was definitely a magical year in 2012 for Sumlin and the Aggies as they took the SEC by storm in their inaugural season. The team went 11-2 and earned a No. 5 ranking in the final AP and coaches polls. It was the Aggies’ highest finish since 1956, when third-year coach Bear Bryant took A&M to a No. 5 ranking following a 9-0-1 season.

5. Manziel wins the Heisman: The accolades began following that first season under Sumlin. Manziel won the 2012 Heisman Trophy, becoming the first freshman to ever accomplish the feat.

6. Sumlin named SEC Coach of the Year: It was the best of times. Sumlin was named 2012 SEC Coach of the Year following an incredible season in which the Aggies led the SEC in total offense, scoring offense and rushing yards, and led the nation in third-down conversions behind the wizardry of Manziel. That year the Aggies became the first SEC team in history to amass more than 7,000 yards of total offense.

7. Sumlin signs second consecutive 5-star QB: The success of Manziel translated into some of the nation’s top quarterbacks looking to play college football at Texas A&M. Sumlin signed 5-star quarterbacks in consecutive seasons, bringing in Kyle Allen in 2014 and following up with the signing of Kyler Murray in 2015. However, the jubilation would be short-lived as both quarterbacks transferred following the 2015 season, leading to questions concerning Sumlin’s abilities as a head coach.

8. Liberty Bowl victory ties record: Following the 2014 season, the 7-5 Aggies outscored West Virginia 45-37 in the Liberty Bowl. It was Sumlin’s third bowl victory at Texas A&M, tying for most in program history.

9. Aggies take down No. 3 Auburn: In that 2014 season, Texas A&M went on the road and defeated the Tigers 41-38. It was Sumlin’s third road win against an AP Top 10 opponent, most in program history.

10. Sumlin records 50th victory: On Nov. 11 of this year, the Aggies defeated New Mexico 55-14 amid rumors that Sumlin would not be their head coach next season. It was Sumlin’s 50th victory at Texas A&M.
