During the end of Texas A&M’s loss to Ole Miss, there was a potential late-game injury to freshman quarterback Conner Weigman, who got the starting nod.

Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher discussed the situation at length after the game.

Fisher said he checked with the medical team for clearance before putting Weigman back in the game.

“They were talking to him and making sure he was OK when he got hit,” Fisher said. “(Head trainer) Lou (Duran) looked at him and said he’s OK. I yelled at (Weigman) then I yelled back at Lou. I said ‘Conner!’ — because I didn’t know who (Weigman) was talking to — then I said ‘Lou, is he OK?’ Then he said ‘Yeah, I’m finished, I’ve already talked to him, he’s good.'”

Fisher reiterated that player safety is paramount in these situations.

“I just asked Lou,” Fisher said. “That’s not for me — he talked to Lou and did that one. I yelled at (Weigman) and he turned to come over and Lou was talking to him and I said ‘Lou is he OK?’ And he said ‘Yes sir, I’ve finished talking to him, he’s good.’ Now if he’s talking to the trainer, I always check with (the training staff) first.”

Weigman completed 28 of his 44 passes for 338 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions in the 31-28 defeat.

Next up for Texas A&M is a home game against Florida on Nov. 5 (12 p.m. ET/ESPN).
