For all Jimbo Fisher’s experience as an offensive coach, his defense is playing quite well.

Texas A&M is 29th nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 20.6 points per game. Fisher was asked during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference about the keys to the Aggies’ stout defense.

“We are recognizing and playing limiting snaps,” Fisher said. “I think we are winning on first downs, our punter is doing outstanding. That backs up teams, (so) it’s tough to sustain long drives. We have kept the defense fresh, but they are doing very well on that side of the ball.”

Fisher’s defense could once again feast against a one-dimensional attack when No. 16 Texas A&M (5-2, 3-1 SEC) visits Mississippi State (4-3, 1-3) at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday.

Below is everything else Fisher said Wednesday.

On 1993 Auburn team and coaching Stan White:

  • We had good players around him. Stan was very athletic. He could run, he started all the way back from his freshman season. He played well, very well. (Had) been in a lot of situations. We had a good running team that year with a loaded backfield.

On knowing Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead before this season:

  • I have not. I didn’t know him from Fordham but know of him from Penn State. I know he’s a very good football coach.

On Mississippi State’s defense, how much do the players factor into the gameplan?

  • If you get caught up on (defensive linemen Jeffrey Simmons and Montez Sweat), the other guys will make you pay. All of a sudden, you are one-on-one with the others, and they are making plays. It’s hard to play as well as they are right now. Watching them against the run, they enhance everyone around them.

On what went well against Alabama and what would you do differently?

  • We competed. The turnover really hurt us, but we responded well. What hurt us is right before half, we had them in third and long, I was planning on calling timeout and getting the ball back to potentially tie the game, but they hit us for a big play and scored, and that’s what they do. … They make you play consistently because they are going to score their points.
