Jimbo Fisher explains what needs to change about the targeting rule

The targeting call has been a hot-button issue recently across football, but especially in the SEC with recent hits involving linebackers at Alabama and LSU.

In his weekly press conference, Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher said the rule needs to be in place for player safety, but that it’s been called inconsistently. Having a player sit out in the next game can be too harsh of a punishment, he added.

The inconsistency was on display with Mack Wilson of Alabama, who hit Tennessee QB Jarrett Guarantano on Saturday, which caused a collarbone injury. Meanwhile, Devin White of LSU, was whistled for targeting on a hit to Nick Fitzgerald, meaning he’ll sit out the first half of next week’s Alabama game. The hits were similar in that they were both up high in the chin and head area of a quarterback.

Jimbo Fisher said he believes targeting is being called inconsistently. "I don't understand what they look at sometimes." Said he knows it's hard and safety is key.
