Texas A&M is only a few plays away from having a significantly better record this season.

The Aggies fell just two points short against No. 2 Clemson in the second week of the season, were within one point of Mississippi State entering the final period of their 28-13 loss and let a 10-point fourth-quarter lead slip away against Auburn.

Pair those results with a more lopsided loss at Alabama, and Texas A&M is just 6-4 overall and 4-3 in the SEC this season. During Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference, Fisher gave his thoughts on how the Aggies can be better down the stretch in close games.

He also briefly previewed Texas A&M’s clash against UAB (9-1) at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday. You can read everything Fisher said Wednesday below.

Where are you better today?

  • Physical on the offensive line and defensive line, running the ball, understanding how to compete and managing a game. Even though we lost to Auburn, we were physical. We have to learn to finish. Every game we were competitive, could have won outside of the Alabama game. … How to practice and how to compete, we’ve taken steps there.

On breaking through and winning big games, how do you get there?

  • It’s a teaching process, and it’s a strain. Winning and losing, there’s a small margin there. Sometimes the hardest step is the last one, like at Mississippi State and Auburn. We couldn’t do it (then), but we did last week.

Is the SEC the best conference?

  • I would say so, if you want to talk about the competitiveness of each game, the home-field advantages, the quality of the offensive lines and defensive lines in the league, the skill of the defensive backs. Just look at the draft picks; you have guys that know ball, and we have the best players. The importance of football in the SEC, there is no doubt.

On UAB RB Spencer Brown:

  • He is elusive, can break tackles. There’s nothing he can’t do. He wears on you, he pounds you. He’s a heck of the player.

On UAB’s defense coming up against the A&M offensive line:

  • They are big, physical. They are No. 4 in (scoring) defense, No. 1 in sacks. You don’t have those numbers without being great up front, and they are.
