Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin has done a solid job guiding the Aggies into the SEC, but after another eight-win season, he may be in hot water if the team suffers another late season collapse.

At the top of the list of the Aggies’ concerns is the quarterback, which Sumlin addressed during the SEC teleconference on Monday.

Sumlin on the spring:
“Our QB position is up for grabs, we have three guys continuing to compete. We return a 1,000-yard rusher, four guys that have started on the offense line — that will take pressure off our first-year starter. Offensively we are ready to go. Our interior people on defense is as good as it’s been.”

Sumlin’s thoughts on early signing period:
“We push the envelope since we’ve been here on getting commits early… How do we get to know these guys while signing them early? That’s the challenge. The early signing day is great but it’s more difficult on the high school players and coaches.”

His philosophy on redshirting:
“There’s two sides of that street. We had to play guys early when I got here. Now a guy like Mike Evans, we only got two years of college football out of him… Last year we got to redshirt more interior players. Skill guys are going to play here, that’s why they come to play. Interior guys need to redshirt, there are some grown men playing in this league.”

His thoughts on new training staff:
“Mark’s (Hocke) done a tremendous job. He’s been at Alabama, been at Georgia, he knows what he’s doing… We need to play better at the end of the season, we need to finish.”
