Former Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond caught the eye of NFL coaches at the Senior Bowl in more ways than just his MVP performance in the game on Saturday.

His coach during the week in Mobile, Alabama was Matt Rhule of the Carolina Panthers, and Rhule explained what stood out to him about Mond.

“We’re talking about a really, really football-smart guy here,” Rhule said after the game, per Chase Goodbread of NFL.com. “He’s got one of those memories. You give him a play and he knows it. He kind of got into a rhythm there in the third quarter, just ripping some seam balls, making some plays. I think he’s got a bright future.”

Mond likely benefitted with more playing time because his teammate in the Senior Bowl, former Alabama QB Mac Jones, had an ankle injury and didn’t play. Mond started both halves, and gave way to former Wake Forest and Georgia QB Jamie Newman in the second and fourth quarters.

“More playing time is always good. I didn’t know I was going to start until back at the hotel (pre-game) it was talked about,” Mond said.

Mond completed 13 of 25 passes for 173 yards, and was in the middle of his team scoring 16 straight points in the third quarter. During the TV broadcast, NFL Network analyst Daniel Jeremiah said Mond, “is making a little money today.”
