Great news to share for Texas A&M’s football program as defensive coordinator Mike Elko reportedly has no plans to leave his post in College Station to take over the Kansas program.

Following the dismissal of Les Miles two months ago following the discovery of accusations against the former LSU coach during his time in Baton Rouge, Kansas removed both Miles and athletic director, Jeff Long — the man who hired Miles at Kansas. Following Miles’ firing, offensive coordinator Mike DeBord was named interim coach while the Jayhawks continue to search for a new full-time coach.

One coach that won’t be taking over at Kansas is Elko, who has reportedly made the decision to stay with Texas A&M according to SEC insider Matt Zenitz of AL.com.

This is great news for the Aggies heading into the 2021 season as Texas A&M looks to have one of, if not the best, defense in the SEC this fall. Elko has been a member of Jimbo Fisher’s A&M staff since the 2018 season.

Last season, Texas A&M’s defense allowed only 21.7 points per game. That figured ranked third in the SEC behind only Alabama and Georgia.

If the Aggie defense lives up to the hype this fall, don’t be surprised to see Elko once again become a hot commodity once the coaching carousel starts spinning. Should Texas A&M have another outstanding season this fall, Elko will likely have put himself in a position to land a job much better than Kansas.
