Nicholls State knows how to play SEC teams.

Last year, it was Georgia that eked out a win against the Colonels. Today, it was the embattled Kevin Sumlin and his Aggies.

Despite Nicholls State tying the game at 14-14 in the 4th quarter, the Aggies were able to regain composure and get the victory in front of its home crowd. It likely won’t do much to quiet the chatter coming out of College Station these days regarding Sumlin’s hot seat.

Key Play

Kendall Bussey scored the go-ahead touchdown with 7:34 remaining in the 4th quarter. The touchdown put the Aggies up 21-14 on Nicholls State.

The Aggies were then able to extend the lead with a late field goal and get the win with a 24-14 score.

Key Stats

The Aggies passing game remains iffy. Quarterbacks Kellen Mond and Jake Hubenak only managed a combined 198 yards in the air while the Nicholls’ passing attack accumulated 264 passing yards.

The Texas A&M’s offense has been clicking, it’s been all about the ground game. Trayveon Williams was productive, and Kendall Bussey had a big game averaging 6.5 yards a carry for 97 total rushing yards.

What It Means

While a loss would have clearly been a disaster, the win doesn’t mean much for the state of the season and Sumlin’s status with the Aggies. The win might prevent another late night Facebook post by a member of the Board of Regents, but the Aggies remain a program in flux as the team moves toward SEC play in a couple of weeks.

The Aggies play Louisiana-Lafayette next week.
