It could have easily gone the other way.

Kellen Mond threw a go-ahead touchdown pass late in the 4th quarter that made its way into Jalen Wydermeyer’s hands thanks to a little bit of luck. The ball was nearly intercepted, but Wydermeyer snagged it after it was deflected by the Auburn defense.

That gave Texas A&M the momentum it needed to pull away from Auburn on Saturday and earn a 31-20 victory. The Aggies outscored Auburn 17-0 in the 4th quarter.

The Aggies (7-1) were in danger the whole game, as the teams traded the lead in the early going.

A&M took a 7-0 lead when Wydermeyer found the end zone on a 10-yard catch to put them up early. Auburn answered a field goal and a touchdown in the 2nd quarter to take a 10-7 lead. Bo Nix was all but sacked but somehow escaped and scrambled for a wild 5-yard TD run.

The Aggies then quickly drove 75 yards and took a 14-10 lead into halftime when Mond dived in for a TD in the final minute.

The Tigers (5-4) came out firing to start the second half, scoring on their first drive to take the lead back. They kicked another field goal on their next drive to extend their lead. The Aggies answered that drive with Wydermeyer’s second touchdown, marching down the field for 75 yards.

Still, it’s hard not to think how close of a call that drive was.

The Aggie defense forced a three-and-out and Mond looked crisp on the next drive, which also ended in a touchdown. That included a deep pass to Ainias Smith for 38 yards that eventually set up the score. That at least gave them a full touchdown advantage.

A&M forced Auburn into another three-and-out on the next drive to put itself in the driver’s seat the rest of the way.

As they have all season, the Aggies mostly stuck to the ground game. They finished with a season-high in rushing yards on the afternoon. Mond also surpassed 1,500 career yards on the ground, making him the third player in SEC history with at least 9,000 passing and 1,500 rushing yards in their career.

He still put together a respectable passing line too, finishing with 18-of-23 for 196 yards and 2 touchdowns.

A&M will look to continue its winning streak and improve its Playoff ranking when it takes on Ole Miss next week. Auburn will try to close out its regular season on a positive note against Mississippi State.
