“Insane” is really the only way to describe Friday afternoon’s Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C.

Texas A&M hardly fielded a defense as it was defeated by Wake Forest 55-52 in an exhilarating shootout — one in which the two teams combined for 107 points and over 1,200 total yards.

At one point, A&M trailed 31-14 in the game. While the Aggies were able to come back and make things exciting, they still couldn’t find quite enough in the tank to get the win.

Here are a few story lines from the Belk Bowl:

Yards and points

If you like points, this game was perfect for you. Also, if you bet on the over, congrats. Just a ridiculous amount of offense and zero defense in this one. Texas A&M quarterback Nick Starkel threw for 499 yards and four touchdowns. As a whole, the Aggies’ offense put up 614 yards. Wake Forest, on the other hand, put up 646 yards of its own. Most of the Demon Deacons’ production came through the air, as well. Combined, the two teams had 1,260 yards.

Christian Kirk’s final game?

Despite being injured for a brief moment in the game, Kirk returned to the field and balled out for the Aggies. It was all but inevitably his final game with A&M. The junior wide receiver is projected by analysts to be a high pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He will likely go in the first round, so there’s not much more he could prove in College Station. Against the Demon Deacons, Kirk caught 13 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns. While the whole offense was impressive, Kirk — once again — stood out for the Aggies.

Lots of turnovers

While both offenses moved swiftly for the most part, they also had trouble hanging onto the ball at times. Texas A&M committed three turnovers (two lost fumbles, one interception), while Wake Forest turned the ball over twice on a pair of fumbles.

PETA protesters

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) deemed the Belk Bowl to be a perfect location to stage a protest before the game. Apparently, the group wants A&M to close its dog laboratories. A pair of protesters ran onto the field early on with signs to voice their concerns. They made it over a minute before security removed them.
