With Tra Carson now in the NFL, Texas A&M will look to find a steady and consistent option at running back.

The backfield in College Station isn’t short on talent. However, there’s a general lack of experience within the group.

At first glance, the two backs with the best chance to start include junior James White and Oklahoma transfer Keith Ford.

White topped the depth chart at the end of spring. Rushing for only 196 yards last year, he’s the leading returning rusher on the squad. Ford is the potential wildcard in this equation. A big-time recruit out of high school, he didn’t see a ton of time in Norman. With the Aggies, he’ll get a chance to display his immense ability.

Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone will likely employ a running back by committee approach within the non-conference slate — with the hopes one running back will grab the reins of the starting job.

This thought is echoed by running backs coach Clarence McKinney. “We want one guy to be ‘the guy.’ Hopefully, we can get one guy to step up and be the guy and maybe a couple of guys to give him a break,” McKinney told Gridiron Now.

A third option is true freshman Trayveon Williams. A 247Sports four-star running back out of high school, he’s got the speed and elusiveness to see the field early.
