The Texas A&M Aggies fired coach Kevin Sumlin on Sunday and already have their top candidate in mind for the opening — Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher.

It will be hard to lure Fisher away from a place where he’s already won a national championship, though, so the Aggies need to make sure they have viable backup plans in case he says no. That way, they can avoid falling into the same mess Tennessee currently finds itself in.

According to FootballScoop.com, the Aggies are maintaining interest in TCU coach Gary Patterson and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy:

Though Fisher has long been the top option, he’s not the only option. Sources told FootballScoop the Aggies have maintained interest in Gary Patterson and Mike Gundy.

Either one of those backup plans would still make a great hire and would likely excite the Texas A&M fan base. Of course, getting one of them to say yes would also be no easy task, but the Aggies likely have the money to get a deal done.

It will be interesting to see how this search plays out, but the Aggies could have their new coach sooner rather than later.
