Johnny Manziel’s path back to professional football has hit a snag in Canada.

The former Texas A&M star, who was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in 2014, worked out for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week in Buffalo, TSN reported. Hamilton coaches and front-office personnel put Manziel through a series of physical and medical tests, but they were convinced he’s not ready to be added to their roster. Among the problems for the Hamilton braintrust were that Manziel is not in game shape or that his off-field workouts are not consistent with someone dedicated to professional football.

“Too many red flags,” said one source.

The Cleveland Browns drafted Manziel 22nd overall, but released him after he struggled on the field and off the field issues too, including a stint in rehab. Manziel has been out of the football since the end of the 2015 season and failed in his attempts this to get into an NFL training camp this summer. A year and a half ago, Manziel was charged with domestic violence in a case involving his ex-girlfriend. The charges were dropped in December after Manziel agreed to meet conditions for one year.

The reason for the interest in Manziel was because Hamilton is 0-8 this season and its quarterback, Zach Collaros, the CFL’s highest-paid player, is the league’s lowest rated passer and was recently benched.

TSN reported that Hamilton team officials wondered if Manziel could manage becoming the face of a franchise and the attention that would come with a return to the spotlight.

The Ticats’ coach is June Jones, who tried to recruit Manziel out of high school when he was the head coach at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Jones remembered Manziel from 2012 when he had a six-touchdown performance against Jones’ SMU Mustangs.

The Tiger-Cats drew headlines across North America after the team hired disgraced former Baylor head coach Art Briles, which brought a crush of criticism, and forced the team to reverse its decision in less than 24 hours.

Earlier this summer, Manziel spoke at an International Football Betting Conference in Costa Rica, where he said he would consider college coaching if his NFL options run out.

UPDATE: According to Pro Football Talk, the Tiger-Cats are still interested in Manziel, despite the above report. Here’s the skinny:

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Tiger-Cats remain extremely interested in Manziel, and the team could still sign him. There’s much more to the story, which may or may not come out. For now, the fact is that the Tiger-Cats have a very positive attitude toward Manziel, and new coach June Jones and others in the organization feel very strongly about signing him to a contract.
