Some people might be tempted to take a year off after receiving $10.5 million not to coach. Former Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin, however, was apparently eager to get back to coaching for the 2018 season.

According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Sumlin was even willing to be an assistant. Sumlin interviewed to be the Oakland Raiders’ offensive coordinator under head coach Jon Gruden, per Schefter. The potential Sumlin-Gruden union wasn’t meant to be, however, as Gruden instead hired former Los Angele Rams QB coach Greg Olson as his OC and Sumlin wound up taking the head coaching job at Arizona, replacing the recently fired Rich Rodriguez. It was probably for the best as Sumlin has coached exclusively at the college level.
