Rocky Long questions Jimbo Fisher's contract: 'We're in this to develop young men'
Texas A&M made headlines a couple of weeks ago when the Aggies hired former Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher to a massive 10-year, $75 million contract.
The arms race to sign big-name coaches to bigger and more lucrative deals is getting out of hand, according to some, and San Diego State coach Rocky Long is among those who question where it all will stop.
Long currently makes $828,304 per year while coaching the Aztecs, which will soon be more than seven times less than Fisher’s salary. On the “Mark & Rich Show” on XTRA 1360 on Monday, Long said salaries are getting embarrassing and added that coaching is about developing young men:
SDSU’s Rocky Long on Jimbo Fisher’s $75M contract: “He doesn't make 1 tackle, doesn't catch 1 pass, he doesn't score 1 TD. We’re not only in this to have a salary, we're in this to develop young men so (coaching salaries are) embarrassing at times” via Mark & Rich Show XTRA 1360

Long makes a great point, as salaries are seemingly getting out of hand. However, Long still profits from the work of unpaid athletes, and $800K is a lot of money compared to the average salary in the United States.
Long’s comments, though accurate, likely won’t stop coaches from landing bigger and better deals in the year to come.
