Former Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill was among the players recognized at Saturday’s NFL Honors ceremony. Tannehill was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year for 2019.

The Tennessee Titans were 2-4 when they benched starting QB Marcus Mariota and turned to Tannehill, who previously played for the Miami Dolphins. Under Tannehill, the Titans went 7-3 for a 9-7 regular-season record, earning a playoff berth. In the playoffs, Tannehill’s Titans managed to beat the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens, but fell short of a trip to the Super Bowl with a loss in the conference championship game.

At the conclusion of the regular-season, Tannehill had a passer-rating of 117.5, best in the NFL. His mark of 9.6 yards per attempt was an NFL-high. Tannehill’s 22 touchdowns for the 2019 season was also a career-high.

Tannehill posted a 70.3 completion percentage while throwing for 2,742 yards in 12 games. During the Tannehill takeover, Tennessee offense went from averaging 16.3 points per game to 30.4 ppg. Passing production also went up from 187.7 yards per game to 245.6 yards per game.

Tannehill received 16 of 50 votes for the award, edged fellow quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers by one vote. Some on social media argued that Garoppolo is more deserving of the “comeback” honor having recovered from a major injury to lead his team to the Super Bowl.
