No. 24 Texas A&M (8-4) will take on No. 17 Wake Forest (10-3) in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl at 11 a.m. ET on Dec. 31 at Jacksonville’s TIAA Bank Field, home of the NFL’s  Jaguars.

Wake Forest won double-digit games for the 2nd time in program history. Dave Clawson became the only active Power 5 head coach to win double-digit games at 4 Division 1 schools (Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green).

The Aggies reached their 43rd bowl game and earned their 13th consecutive bowl invitation, a school record and the 7th-longest streak in FBS.

Texas A&M has played Wake Forest only once, losing a 55-52 shootout in the 2017 Belk Bowl in which the teams combined for more than 1,200 yards.

The Aggies have played in the Gator Bowl twice, most recently topping North Carolina State, 52-13, following the 2018 season.

Wake Forest will be making its program-record 6th straight bowl appearance and 16th overall. The Demon Deacons played in the inaugural Gator Bowl game in 1946. They haven’t returned since.

Here are 5 things to know about Wake Forest leading up to this year’s Gator Bowl.

1. Bowl prepared

Wake Forest will be well prepared to take on Texas A&M. The Demon Deacons played 9 bowl-eligible teams this season.

They were the first ACC team to become bowl eligible thanks to a 6-0 start. That win streak extended to 8-0, the best start in school history and the longest winning streak ever at Wake Forest.

The Demon Deacons won 7 ACC games, the most in program history.

2. Scoring machine

Wake Forest set the school record for scoring in a season with 536 points, topping 500 for the first time. Only Pittsburgh (559) scored more points among ACC teams.

Wake is 1 of 4 ACC schools all time to score at least 500 points in a season. Along with Pitt this year, Florida State did it twice (1995, 2013), and Clemson did it in 2018.

The Demon Deacons average 41.2 points per game, also a school record. Over the last 4 seasons in the ACC, only Wake Forest and Clemson have averaged more than 30 points per game.

3. Solid quarterback

Sam Hartman has been on fire over the last 10 games, throwing for 3,233 yards and 30 touchdowns. He has the program record for touchdown passes in a season (36) and career (69), and he is 2nd on Wake Forest’s career passing yardage list with 8,962 yards. Only Riley Skinner (9,762) had more.

Hartman, who has thrown for 3,924 yards this season, can run as well, scoring 11 rushing TDs. That ranks 2nd to Larry Russell (15 in 1971) for rushing TDs by a quarterback in program history.

Hartman has accounted for 47 total touchdowns this season, most in the ACC. He’s 1 of just 5 QBs in ACC history to account for at least 44 TDs in a season, joining Lamar Jackson (51), Deshaun Watson twice (50, 47) and Kenny Pickett (47).

4. Receiving duo

A.T. Perry and Jaquarii Roberson have the chance to be the first pair of Wake Forest receivers to each catch double-digit TD passes in a season. No duo in ACC history has accomplished the feat. Perry has a school-record 14, while Roberson has 8.

Perry’s 14 TD grabs rank 7th in ACC history. DeAndre Hopkins (18) holds the record.

Perry and Roberson each has topped 1,000 receiving yards for the season. Perry is at 1,166, while Roberson stands at 1,078.

5. Record-setting kicker

Nick Sciba broke the school record for career points with 421. He is 4th on the ACC all-time scoring list behind Ross Martin (430 at Duke). Dustin Hopkins (466 at Florida State) and Travis Etienne (468 at Clemson).
