It appears Texas A&M could be losing some defensive depth this offseason as linebacker Brian Johnson has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to Matt Zenitz of AL.com.

Last season, Johnson posted seven tackles, including 1.0 for loss and one forced fumble. For his efforts, Johnson won the team’s special teams newcomer award.

But this year, Johnson has only played in four games. He has one tackle and no other statistics.

Because he’s only played in four games, Johnson can redshirt and not lose a year of eligibility this season. It will be interesting to see if that played a role in his decision to transfer.

Johnson was a 3-star prospect in the 2018 recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Before committing to Texas A&M, he reportedly also received offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Arizona State and a few other Power 5 teams.
