No SEC running back finished with more rushing yards this season than Texas A&M’s Trayveon Williams. The Aggie back enters the Gator Bowl with 1,524 yards on the ground and is within earshot of setting the all-time Texas A&M single-season rushing mark if he has a great game against N.C. State.

The current Aggie record holder is Darren Lewis, who rushed for 1,692 yards back in 1988. Interestingly enough, Lewis also holds the mark for second-most rushing yards in a single A&M season with 1,691 in 1990.

Taking those numbers into consideration, Williams will need 169 rushing yards in the Gator Bowl to surpass Lewis’ all-time A&M single-season mark. During Sunday’s media availability, Aggie center Erik McCoy was asked about how important getting Williams over the mark is to A&M’s offensive line.

“I feel like we have got to get him to the 170 to get him over the record,” McCoy answered.

While Trayveon admits he wants the record, he says the most important thing is for Texas A&M to start the Jimbo Fisher era off with a bowl win. That may be more than pure lip service when you consider Texas A&M has lost three bowl games in a row. The last bowl win for the Aggies came back in 2014 in the Liberty Bowl against West Virginia.

“I couldn’t lie and say it’s not important. When we first come here as a student-athlete, as a player, you want to set your mark on the program,” Williams said. “Most importantly we want to get this win. The last four years, we’ve been unsuccessful in the bowl games, so definitely we want to get that done, get that done for the seniors, but want to get that win to get the Jimbo era going, start the new direction of this program.”

Of course, accomplishing both would be the best of both worlds for the Aggies. Should Williams hit the mark and rush for at least 170 yards in the Gator Bowl, there’s an outstanding chance Texas A&M comes away with a win over N.C. State.

The Gator Bowl is set to be played Monday, Dec. 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
