Tennessee’s latest spring game was cut short at halftime due to inclement weather in the Knoxville area. While the exhibition game didn’t last long, the display was enough to prove that Tennessee has two solid options at quarterback moving forward.

Junior signal caller Quinten Dormady particularly has an outstanding performance, completing every pass he attempted (10-for-10) for 120 yards and two scores. Redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano wasn’t far behind, completing four of his five attempts for 41 yards and had plenty of opportunities to gain yards on the ground had he not been ruled down every time he tried to take off and gain yards with his feet.

Immediately after the short game, Butch Jones met with the media to discuss his thoughts on his team with the spring officially coming to an end.

“I think this team has taken major steps from practice one to 15 but we have a lot of work to do,” Jones said. “It starts in the weight room, getting bigger and stronger… We held 20 players out today… Great day, unfortunately, cut short by weather.”

Jones on the team’s quarterbacks:

“They have made tremendous progress. All spring we’ve talked about don’t compare, compete. They competed all spring, I thought that was evident today. The quarterback challenge, that’s a measuring stick, a measuring tool for us to see how they respond when they go out there, all eyes on them… I’ve been pleased with the quarterback position all spring.”

Jones on when he may name a starter at quarterback:

“There’s no timeframe. I don’t ever believe you give yourself a set time when you have to name a starting quarterback. I want them to compete. I think competition is extremely healthy and I think they have all elevated their games because of that competition. So I want them to compete. We have no timetable. I was pleased with the way they performed today.”

Jones on the challenge of replacing so many star players:

“The word opportunity. It’s a great opportunity for players that may not have had an opportunity in the past. Now their role is expanded, that’s what makes college football season… Obviously, we lose a lot of production, their lives are about to change a lot in a week. Draft weekend is going to be very special for Tennessee.”

Jones on the team’s young receivers:

“Jauan had a great, consistent spring… Marquez Callaway had as good of a spring as anyone on our roster… He had a higher number of reps of anyone. It will be great to get Brandon Johnson back will be big… We will be young there.”
