Tennessee and Florida State both suffered brutal losses in Week 1, with the Vols losing 38-30 to Georgia State and the Seminoles falling 36-31 to Boise State.

On Saturday’s edition of ESPN’s College GameDay, the analysts debated which loss was worse. Kirk Herbstreit absolutely tore apart FSU, but Desmond Howard and David Pollack said the Vols’ loss was worse.

Pollack said the Vols looked every bit as bad as they did in the later years under former coach Butch Jones:

“Tennessee was quick to make fun of their old coach (Butch Jones),” Pollack said. “The brick-by-brick and the 5-star heart. If I’m a Tennessee fan I’m really disturbed by what I saw last week. Running guys on the field the last second. Guys in the wrong gaps lining up. I’m pretty concerned about the things I saw that have to be fixed. So, Tennessee losing to Georgia State was worse (than what’s going on at Florida State).”

Meanwhile, Howard said the Vols’ schedule is much harder than FSU’s, making today’s game against BYU super important:

“I tell you what, if Tennessee doesn’t win today though, they’re looking at starting the season off 1-6,” Howard said. “They have Chattanooga, but after that they have to travel to play Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State and have to travel to Alabama. That’s a 1-6 start. So, today is crucial for Tennessee.”

The Vols host BYU at 7 p.m. Eastern time. The game can be seen on ESPN. Can they avoid an 0-2 start?
