A.J.Johnson is sticking around in Denver.

The Broncos announced Wednesday that they have signed Johnson, a former star linebacker at Tennessee, to a future contract that will keep him on the roster going into next season. Johnson originally made the team’s 53-man roster and appeared in one game, though he was waived in late November and re-signed to the practice squad.

The contract likely comes as a huge relief for Johnson, who along with former Vols teammate Michael Williams was accused of rape in 2014. They were ultimately found not guilty in July, and Johnson finally landed on an NFL roster after a three-year legal battle.

Johnson compiled an astounding 424 tackles at Tennessee, including a career-high of 138 as a sophomore in 2012. The four-year starter always seemed like he’d be a solid pro some day, and the Broncos are giving him another chance to prove that.
