Butch Jones and the Vols have won four straight games since suffering a heartbreaking defeat at Alabama on Oct. 24 to move to 7-4 overall and clinch he program’s second consecutive bowl berth.

For some, winning pretty by stepping on the opponent’s throat is more important.

Former Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray relayed the message Saturday night on Twitter during the Vols’ victory at Mizzou, a hard-to-watch affair dominated by defense. He doesn’t believe Tennessee’s offense has the killer instinct needed to be successful in the SEC and said as much on his social media account:

Bray’s correct to an extent. The Vols haven’t pulled away from inferior competition since a dismantling of Kentucky three weeks ago and have been largely inconsistent on offense this season.

What he fails to take into consideration however is what Tennessee was matched up against facing the Tigers. Coming into Saturday’s game, Mizzou’s defense was ranked third-best overall in the SEC behind Alabama and Florida giving up just 297.7 yards and 14.7 points per game — not to mention it was Gary Pinkel’s last home game as coach (providing the Tigers with an emotional surge).
