With spring camp set to conclude on Saturday, Tennessee isn’t anywhere close to naming a starting quarterback under Jeremy Pruitt. Partly due to the fact Stanford graduate transfer quarterback Keller Chryst has yet to even arrive on campus in Knoxville.

However, for Tennessee’s first-year coach, he’s still wanting to see more before naming his first starting quarterback on Rocky Top. During a recent appearance on ESPNU Radio on SiriusXM, Pruitt offered up these comments on the ongoing competition in Knoxville.

“It’s going to be an open competition all the way until we figure out who our quarterback is,” Pruitt said. “The most important part of the quarterback position is how do you get the other guys to play around you. Can you bring out the best in everybody else?”

Tennessee’s coach may have a defensive background but he was quite clear that he knows what a starting quarterback should look like in college football. While he admits Jarrett Guarantano and Will McBride have done “everything we’ve asked of them,” a player’s ability to lead the offense is far more important than any type of physical attributes to the Volunteer coach.

“At the end of the day, it’s about taking your team of guys on your side of the ball and taking it, no matter what it takes, to put it in the end zone on the other end,” Pruitt continued. “Some guys have it, some guys don’t. I will say this, the guys that have been here this spring have done everything we’ve asked them to do.”
