During his coaching career in the SEC and ACC, Jeremy Pruitt has been fortunate to work with some of the best defensive backs in modern college football history.

Whether those players were Day 1 starters after signing as five-star recruits or unknown, zero-star prospects simply trying to earn a scholarship during a summer camp, Pruitt has helped develop many defensive backs into elite college players and eventually NFL draft picks.

Taking that into consideration, there may not be many better coaches to ask about what it takes to play defensive back in college at a high level.

For Pruitt, the ideal prospect has size, speed, strength and versatility. When it comes to former players that immediately jump out as players that fit that mold, Pruitt mentioned Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick as two that stand out.

He followed up those comments by noting how important it is for defensive backs to have the ability to line up all over the field.

“You know when I’m looking at guys, you know, to me, their grade goes up, based off the fact if I believe they can play multiple spots,” Pruitt said in the video below. “So, that’s just my opinion. Fortunately, I’ve coached a bunch of them that I’d say this is what you’re looking for, that’s just two guys because they can play multiple spots, because it creates natural depth your secondary.”
