If you missed the story over the weekend, former Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton shared some troubling stories regarding the treatment he and his family received during his days as the Volunteers starting signal caller. Crompton commented that his experiences have kept him from Knoxville all these years later. Apparently, you can count Lane Kiffin among those not wanting to hear Crompton’s sad history with the Vols.

Crompton entered the 2008 season projected to be the next great Tennessee signal caller, only to have a disastrous first season as the team’s starter. Be the end of the season, which had preseason SEC Championship hopes, the Vols went 5-7, and longtime head coach Phillip Fulmer was fired by the school. Fulmer’s dismissal eventually led to Kiffin’s hiring.

As a junior, Crompton managed only 889 passing yards and four touchdowns to five interceptions. One particular moment from the season that still stays with Crompton occurred after a disappointing game when a Tennessee fan wished death upon him and his family on the ride home.

While Tennessee fans obviously look back upon Kiffin’s short tenure in Knoxville with disdain, the move proved to be great for Crompton. Following his horrific 2008 season, Crompton had a nice bounce back campaign tossing for 2,800 yards and 27 touchdowns and was even drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

In the Chattanooga Times Free Press story referenced by Kiffin, Crompton even spoke glowingly of Kiffin. Despite that fact, check out Kiffin’s response to the story, which included ‘#timetoletitgoJC’ in the tweet:

Needless to say, it’s an interesting take by Kiffin considering Crompton’s defense of his short Tennessee tenure.
