Coaching in Knoxville comes with a certain level of expectations, and nobody knows that better than former Tennessee head coach Phil Fulmer.

Fulmer served as the Vols head coach from 1992-2008. During his time there, the Volunteers went 152-52 with two SEC Championships and won the 1998 BCS National Championship.

Fulmer had a remarkable run with the Vols, but even he eventually became the target of scrutiny. He eventually left the program after the 2008 season. He definitely understands the pressure of coaching in Knoxville, and he understands exactly what Butch Jones is going through.

Ray Snader with The Citizen Tribune shared Fulmer’s comments on the Volunteers current situation:

“I understand exactly where he is,” Fulmer said of the Jones situation. “It’s a tough time for him…Nobody ever promised anybody that every day is going to be good. Everybody has difficulties, it’s just that in athletics, and particularly at a place like Tennessee, it is so exposed.”

Fulmer still hopes the Vols can put together a strong finish to the season, and he did not comment on a potential replacement for Jones:

“My hope is that the players will run out, and make a good year out of it,” said Fulmer. “I wouldn’t begin to go there (on a replacement for Jones). There’s so much football to be played and that’s not my responsibility anyway”

A strong finish to this season would take quite a turnaround and may not even save Jones’ job at this point. Tennessee is currently 3-3 and remains without a win in the SEC as the Vols get set to take on Alabama. Saturday’s kickoff is set for 3:30 pm EST on CBS.
