Tennessee’s depth at receiver got better this week. However, perhaps more interesting than that fact is how exactly the Vols will be getting help on the outside of its offense.

Former Tennessee-Chattanooga quarterback Zack Weatherly has announced he will leave the school to join the Tennessee football program, but he won’t be looking for snaps at quarterback, he’s planning on playing receiver for the Vols.

Weatherly announced the news Tuesday night via Twitter. Here’s his statement regarding his decision:

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound Weatherly was a two-star quarterback in the 2016 recruiting cycle. He redshirted his first year at Chattanooga and still has four years left to play in Knoxville. Appalachian State and San Diego State both offered him scholarships coming out of high school.

If he can successfully make the transition to become a capable Divison I receiver, it’s not hard to imagine Tennessee using Weatherly in various trick play situations. Judging by his high school highlight reel, Weatherly has a strong enough arm to push the ball down the field against a defense asleep at the wheel. He also shows off his speed at the 50-second mark.
