Tennessee has honored the armed forces in the past, and the school is doing so again.

On Thursday, the Vols announced that they have added a POW/MIA Chair of Honor to Neyland Stadium. The seat, which has a view of the stadium from section ZZ12, will remain vacant to honor the armed forces.

Tennessee stated that it is believed to be the first dedicated POW/MIA seat to be added to a college athletic facility.

“East Tennessee and the University of Tennessee is a proud veteran community,” Tennessee director of athletics Phillip Fulmer said in a press release. “Being involved with and honoring our nation’s armed forces has always been a point of emphasis within the athletics department. The Chair of Honor is one more element we hope will pay tribute to the military community — in this case, the brave men and women who are still prisoners of war or missing in action.

“As the [chair’s] plaque reads, there will always be a place in Neyland Stadium awaiting their return.”

In the past, the Vols have sent care packages, flags and signed items to the military overseas. They also have held “Salute to Service” events for military members, veterans and their families.

Along with the installation of the Chair of Honor, Tennessee will fly the National League of Families POW/MIA flag at Neyland Stadium.
