Butch Jones pledged to evaluate each and every member of his coaching staff this offseason and the first change on the defensive side of the ball has been made, as Tennessee has officially named Charlton Warren as its new defensive backs coach.

Former DB coach Willie Martinez will not be returning for 2017. Charlton comes over from North Carolina, where he coached the defensive backs in Chapel Hill the previous two seasons.

“We would like to welcome Coach Warren, his wife, Jocelyn, and their three children to the Tennessee family,” said Tennessee head football coach Butch Jones, per the team’s official website. “Coach Warren is a passionate, knowledgeable and driven football coach that has an outstanding history of developing defensive backs on the collegiate level. He also has a great reputation as one of the top recruiters in the country with strong ties to our recruiting areas. We feel extremely fortunate to add someone of his caliber to our coaching staff and our defensive meeting room.

“I have known Willie Martinez for a long time and have the utmost respect for him as a coach and a person. I want to thank him for all his contributions to the Tennessee program over the past four seasons. Making changes on your staff is never easy, but we feel it’s necessary as we move forward as a program.”

This change was not a surprise following Tennessee’s defensive collapse during the final three weeks of the season. After giving up only 20 points per game in 2015, the Volunteer defense gave up an average of over 28 points per game this season. Tennessee’s defense also ranked No. 10 in the SEC in passing yards allowed after surrendering 230 yards allowed per game.

Meanwhile, North Carolina’s passing defense was ranked No. 12 in the nation last season, after allowing just under 181 yards of passing per game. The 11 passing touchdowns allowed by the Tar Heels tied for the fourth fewest in the nation.

Charlton is a graduate of the Air Force Academy and spent time on the Air Force coaching staff as well as the Nebraska coaching staff.
