Heading into this weekend’s game against Mizzou, Tennessee’s defense has been a mixed bag.

The Vols have the eighth-worst run defense in the nation and the fourth-best pass defense in the country. However, defensive coordinator Bob Shoop thinks the Vols’ numbers have been a bit misleading this year.

He said that he thinks the Vols are a little better against the run than the numbers indicate and a little worse against the pass, but he’s not exactly sure what to make of the defense yet this year (via 247Sports):

“I think it’s weird going to into game 10 and saying, ‘I’m really not sure,’ but that’s probably the truth of the matter,” Shoop said.

“I know what the statistics tell you, that we’re one of the better pass defenses, but nobody throws the ball against us. And I know it’s also a little deceptive. I don’t think our run defense is as bad as the numbers would indicate, and I don’t think our pass defense is as good as the numbers would indicate.”

Both the run defense and pass defense will have to step up if the Vols are going to win at Faurot Field on Saturday, as Mizzou’s offense is hitting its stride the past few weeks.

Saturday night’s game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Central time and can be seen on the SEC Network.
