Whether it was as a player or as a head coach, Johnny Majors has given a lot to the University of Tennessee.

As a player, he achieved All-American status and was a runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1956. Later in life, Majors became the Vols’ head coach, where he earned a .645 win percentage (116-62) and three SEC Championships.

The Tennessee legend continues to add to his already impressive resume. On Monday, it was announced that Majors had been named to the inaugural class of the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame.

His inclusion with the inaugural class stems from his success in the Sugar Bowl, both as a player and coach.

Majors played in the Sugar Bowl in 1957 to close out his season as the Heisman Trophy runner-up, but he also coached two teams to victory in the Sugar Bowl as well — Tennessee in 1986 (35-7 win over Miami) and in 1991 (23-22 win over Virginia).

It’s quite the accomplishment to be one of the 16 people included in the inaugural class. Majors certainly earned his spot on that list, however.

All of the living members of this year’s class will be attending the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, and they’ll be recognized for their achievements at halftime.
