Ty Chandler certainly turned some heads with his performance against the Kentucky Wildcats.

Tennessee’s freshman RB started against Kentucky with star RB John Kelly unavailable due to a suspension. Chandler certainly made the most of his time and ran for 120 yards on 22 carries with 2 TDs. He added two catches for 33 yards with the offense.

Chandler has demonstrated an ability to be explosive with the ball in his hands. He had a 91-yard touchdown on a kickoff return against Indiana State and recorded 45 yards on just four carries against South Carolina.

Kelly remains the star for the Volunteers offense, but offensive coordinator Larry Scott did not hesitate when asked if Chandler had earned more carries after his performance:

“My god, yes. You have too,” said Scott. “That guy, the explosive nature that he brings to the offense.”

Scott said Chandler is the kind of player that you hope to continue bringing into the program:

“He’s one of those guys that you hope to continue to put as many as you can in the program,” Scott said. “They’re called erasers. Even when things are bad they’re able to erase not so perfect situations.”

Saturday’s game against Kentucky marked the first time this season that Chandler had recorded double-digit touches with the offense. Even with the return of Kelly, it looks like the Vols will try and incorporate Chandler into the game plan a bit more.

You can hear all of Scott’s comments from Monday here in a video posted by Vince Ferrara of WNML in Knoxville.

Tennessee will take on Southern Miss this weekend. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm EST on the SEC Network.
