The Tennessee Volunteers had a rough second quarter against the Pittsburgh Panthers Saturday in Neyland Stadium.

The Volunteers looked like they were going to go up 17-7 over Pittsburgh; however, that changed in a hurry.

The Volunteers had a first and goal at the Pitt 7-yard-line, and it ended up being third and goal from the 31 yard-line before the Vols kicked a field goal and extended the lead to 10-7. The Vols suffered brutal back-t0-back 15-yard-penalties in the red zone.

The very next Pittsburgh drive, the Vols committed yet another 15-yard-penalty from a Jeremy Banks body slam which led to a Pittsburgh touchdown pass.

If that wasn’t enough, Tennessee QB Joe Milton fumbled on the first play of the Vols next series, and Pitt recovered in the red zone. Thankfully, the Vols defense bowed up and didn’t allow a Pitt touchdown. Pitt kicked a field goal to extend the 17-13 lead.

Thanks to wide receiver Jimmy Calloway, the Vols tied it up just before halftime 20-20, but Pitt scored a touchdown with just seconds remaining until halftime to take the 27-20 lead.

Penalties crushed the Vols in the second quarter. The Vols committed 8 penalties in the first half for 95 yards. Another 15-yard penalty was called back near the end of the 2nd quarter, too.

The second half must get cleaned up if the Vols want to escape with a win.
