After winning its 12th consecutive game by beating Alabama 71-68 at home and losses last week from Duke, Michigan and Virginia, Tennessee is the nation’s new No. 1 team in the Associated Press college basketball poll.

The AP poll is issued every Monday during the college basketball season.

“Tennessee basketball hasn’t been ranked No. 1 in a long time,” Jordan Bone said following Tennessee’s latest win. “That’s a good feeling, but we can’t be so locked in on that. We have to continue to stay hungry. We can’t be so focused on that. It’s so fleeting. It can change really quick.”

Rick Barnes’ squad received 48 of the possible 64 first-place votes in the poll. Duke is rated No. 2, Virginia is No. 3, Gonzaga is No. 4 and Michigan is No. 5.

Tennessee has not been ranked No. 1 in the AP poll since the 2007-08 season. That came after No. 2 Tennessee beat No. 1 Memphis on the road. However, that top ranking was short-lived as Tennessee lost its following game at Vanderbilt. Ironically enough, No. 1 Tennessee travels to Nashville to face Vanderbilt on Wednesday.

Kentucky is ranked No. 8 in the new poll while Auburn falls to No. 14 after losing to the Wildcats over the weekend. Ole Miss is ranked No. 20 while Mississippi State remains ranked at No. 22, holding steady at No. 22. LSU rounds out the top 25 of the new poll.
