Two of the top women’s basketball programs in the country will play for the first time in more than a decade during the 2019-20 season.

On Tuesday, the Tennessee women’s basketball team announced a two-year series against UConn, starting with the 2019-20 season. The two schools played regularly from 1995-2007, but haven’t played since.

When UConn hosts Tennessee in 2019-20, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Pat Summitt Foundation and the National Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The Lady Vols will host the Huskies during the 2020-21 season with proceeds again benefiting those two organizations, along with the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

“The Basketball Hall of Fame is proud to celebrate all levels of the game for both men and women,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, in a press release. “When it comes to women’s college hoops, there’s no matchup more highly anticipated than that of UConn vs. Tennessee. We’re so proud to unite these teams in a contest benefiting great causes and honoring the late Hall of Famer Pat Summitt.”

Tennessee and UConn last played on Jan. 6, 2007, a matchup that the Lady Vols won, 70-64. Tennessee has won the last three meetings between the schools, but UConn leads the all-time series, 13-9.

The two schools have met in the championship game of the NCAA Tournament four times, all of which UConn has won, with the last coming on April 6, 2004.

“We are so excited to join UConn for games that will generate incredible interest for women’s basketball and benefit the Pat Summitt Foundation, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame,” Tennessee coach Holly Warlick said in a press release. “Basketball fans will be intrigued to watch these two programs meet on the court again, and I know Lady Vols and Huskies fans will be eager to pack arenas, cheer on their teams and make a difference for some very worthy causes, including one bearing the name of my coach, mentor and friend.”

The games will be televised on the ESPN family of networks.
