Tennessee freshman Tyler Byrd and Marcus Tatum, as well as JUCO transfer Jeff George lost their stripes in practice Tuesday.

Tennessee newcomers have had to “earn their stripes” throughout Butch Jones’ tenure in Knoxville. Players are given a black helmet stripe at the beginning of fall camp and are asked to prove to their teammates that they are ready to earn the orange stripe that will be displayed on game day.

Prior to Tuesday, defensive backs Baylen Buchanan and Nigel Warrior were the only two players to shed their black stripes in fall camp.

Byrd rated as a four-star prospect and the No. 87 overall player for the 2016 national signing class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. The former cornerback standout has transitioned to wide receiver during Tennessee’s fall camp.

Tatum rated as a three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 43 offensive tackle for the 2016 class. He was named to the All-Central Florida Football Second Team and Florida All-State Class 6A First Team as a senior.

George rated as a three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 6 wide receiver and No. 33 overall player for the 2016 JUCO transfer class. He recorded 49 receptions for 685 yards and five touchdowns while helping Dodge City Community College (Kan.) reach the Salt Lake City Bowl in 2015.
