On Tuesday, Vanderbilt athletic director and vice chancellor David Williams announced that he was stepping down and retiring.

Later in the day, Williams held a press conference in which he discussed the current state of the Commodores’ athletic programs, who should replace him and more.

“It’s Vanderbilt. It’s Nashville. I’ve got the best group of coaches. I have the most outstanding group of student-athletes,” Williams told the media. “If you really want to do college athletics the way it was designed to be done … that’s what we do.”

Williams’ 10-year contract ended on June 30, but he extended his tenure to help ease the transition.

“I think we’re on very solid ground. I met with the coaches today,” Williams said. “I wanted to give the university a chance to do a thorough search.”

Williams also shared his thoughts on what Vanderbilt should do to fill his position.

“If you don’t look within and hire within, what are you producing?” Williams said. “I would definitely look at the people within, if I were hiring.”
