Vanderbilt was riding high after a 3-0 start to the season but reality has set in a bit with consecutive SEC losses to Alabama and Florida. The Commodores now face another tough task this week as the team hosts Georgia.

Head coach Derek Mason was among the first coaches to speak during Wednesday’s SEC Coaches Teleconference.

Here’s a summary of what the Vanderbilt coach had to say:

  • “We come out of a three-game stretch that has been the toughest at Vanderbilt in 10-15 years. It’s been a good test for our guys. We played with Florida, we just didn’t execute well enough in the end. We are fairly healthy, we just have to keep working. (UGA) will come to the lines of scrimmage.”
  • How much different is Georgia’s special teams this year? “Georgia has always had great players on that unit, last year those things just went our way. It’s more of a college scheme over there, (as opposed to pro scheme last season).”
  • Thoughts on targeting? “It all starts with player safety. I’m glad there is a review process to see how bad the hit was. I like the process we have now. I think our game needed some cleaning up. I think it affects tackling more than anything else.”
