Vanderbilt’s depth has continued to be tested in 2020. It’s been dealing with players missing time due to injuries, positive COVID-19 tests and contact-tracing protocols. Now, the Commodores may be losing an experienced defender for good.

According to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz and Rivals.com, Vanderbilt safety Frank Coppet has entered the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer. The redshirt senior has played in 16 career games for the Commodores, making six starts in 2018 and two starts in 2019.

Coppet has only played one game this season, recording one tackle in Vanderbilt’s loss to LSU on Oct. 3. Still, the Commodores may be losing some depth in a secondary that’s already been weakened for various reasons.

During his time at Vanderbilt, Coppet has dealt with two ACL tears. He missed all of his freshman year in 2016, then was limited to two games last year.

Also, prior to his redshirt freshman season in 2017, Coppet was shot while trying to recover a teammate’s stolen phone, suffering “bird-shot wounds to his arms,” according to an ESPN report at the time.

If Coppet decides to transfer to another school, he could build off his prior playing experience and have a strong ending to his college career.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt will continue to look for better results this season. The Commodores are set to play at Kentucky on Saturday at noon ET on SEC Network.
