Former Vanderbilt QB Johnny McCrary transferred away from the program back in 2015 while dealing with some family issues, including the death of his father.

He spent the next two years playing for Clark Atlanta, a Division II school, with some mixed results. However, he played well enough to earn an invitation to the HBCU Spirit of America Bowl, which gives athletes from historically black colleges to gain attention from NFL scouts.

The problem? The bowl requires a $650 fee to participate, and McCrary didn’t have that kind of money to spend.

Fortunately for him, Vanderbilt fans were more than willing to help their former quarterback. McCrary’s GoFundMe page raised more than twice the amount needed, and many of the messages from donors included pro-Vandy sentiments.

Even if McCrary doesn’t land on an NFL roster in the next year, this was a classy gesture from many Vanderbilt fans, who were happy to prove to McCrary that he’s a Commodore for life.
