Temple took a dive into The Swamp to find its next head coach.

Florida defensive coordinator Geoff Collins is headed to Philadelphia to replace Matt Rhule, reports ESPN’s Brett McMurphy.

Collins took over defensive duties for the Gators in 2015 after four years doing much of the same for Mississippi State (2011-15), where he had a helping hand in arguably the best run — 32 total wins — in program history.

Florida finished the 2015 season ranked No. 8 nationally in total defense (310.2 ypg) and was one of seven FBS teams since 1996 to not allow a touchdown against three different Power Five conference opponents in road or neutral-site games in the same season.

In 2016, the Gators rank t-10th in scoring defense (17.9 ppg), 16th in opponent red zone conversions (75 percent) and 9th in yards per play allowed (4.77).

With inevitable roster turnover on defense and the departure of a talent like Collins, coach Jim McElwain’s next hire will be crucial for 2017 and beyond; don’t be surprised if he goes in-house and promotes linebackers coach Randy Shannon to fill the void.
