About Georgia Football
The Georgia Bulldogs have become a powerhouse in the SEC under coach Kirby Smart, who learned under the legendary Nick Saban at Alabama. The program first fielded a football team in 1892, but it wasn’t until 1942 that the Dawgs claimed their first national championship. Then it didn’t happen again until 1980. Finally, in 2021, Smart and the Bulldogs snapped another long title-less streak, winning back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022.
A founding member of the Southeastern Conference, the Bulldogs have always been a force to contend with, but under Smart, the needle is pointing up. Georgia is now one of the premier programs in the country, and that doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. The Dawgs have won 14 SEC titles in their storied history, including 4 victories in the SEC Championship Game (which began in 1992).
Georgia has produced 2 Heisman Trophy winners over the years — Frank Sinkwich in 1942 and Herschel Walker in 1982. Walker is consistently mentioned among the best running backs in the history of football. A total of 41 Bulldogs have earned consensus All-American honors and the program has been sending plenty of players on to the NFL recently.
