My Experience With Underdog Fantasy
As a sports fan residing in the state of Florida, I’ve been long frustrated with my lack of legal sports betting options. While Underdog is not sports betting, it’s absolutely a way to layer in a bit of fun and stakes into my sports fandom. Like anyone who has had the experience of getting much more into a MLB season as a result of having a fantasy baseball team, Underdog Fantasy has a similar effect where participating in contests will get you much more into the evening’s game or this weekend’s golf tournament.
I’ve been using Underdog Fantasy now for over a year now on a near daily basis. I’ve logged into the app probably thousands of times. I’ve participated in every type of contest available on the app such as pick’em contests, best ball tournaments, DFS contests for a slate of NBA games that include thousands of entrants and even DFS contests for a slate of games where I’m playing heads up or 1-on-1 with another participant. I’ve played these contests across baseball, basketball, football, golf and hockey. What have I learned as a result of 6+ months of living and breathing Underdog Fantasy? Here are my main takeaways:
What I’ve learned about Underdog
- The Underdog Fantasy app is excellent. If you’ve only used the Underdog app, you probably aren’t fully appreciating how good it is. Check out some of the other DFS apps, and you’ll quickly realize that Underdog’s app is truly outstanding. It’s well designed, clean, responsive and just fun to use. Depositing/withdrawing money is easy. I’ve learned to really appreciate the Underdog experience from a user interface perspective.
- Underdog contests absolutely add fun to sports watching. Whether you need Giannis to get a few more rebounds before the game ends on a Thursday night Bucks-Knicks game, or you really need Justin Thomas to birdie a couple more holes on Sunday, it’s incredibly fun to pair the stakes of an Underdog contest with what’s happening on the TV in front of you. It raises the stakes. It adds to the experience.
- Winning is hard. Enjoy the ride. Look, maybe I’m just not that good at this stuff, but I’ve probably lost more than I’ve won across the board in the contests I participate in. My colleague, Adam Spencer, wins way more than me. But overall, I’m not putting big dollars in these contests, and a $5 entry fee on a night of NBA action is well worth it.
- The best ball contests are my favorite part about Underdog. The daily contests are the regular rhythm of any daily fantasy app, but Underdog’s best ball contests are just really great. I joined the PGA Majors best ball tournament prior to The Masters kicking off. It made The Masters (which I already love) even more fun. Never have I cheered so hard for Justin Rose and Corey Conners! Spoiler alert: I didn’t make it past The Masters for this tournament (each major is a round of elimination in the contest). Bummer.
What do I think Underdog could do better?
While Underdog is really about as good as it gets with respect to daily fantasy contest experience and entertainment, there are a few things that I think could make Underdog even better.
- Underdog should entice new users with a free entry into a major contest. After making a deposit of say $10 or so, Underdog should also give a free entry into a best ball contest for example. This will encourage long-term engagement of its users, and also be a nice additional welcome bonus component.
- No rewards or loyalty program. I think there is tremendous potential here that would really solidify Underdog as a long-term dominant player in this space. The more you play, users should be earning rewards points. The more points, the higher “tiers” of status you should achieve. The highest tiers could offer some very interesting rewards such as exclusive contests or bonus entries into the best and biggest contests on the platform.
Underdog is still a relatively new product, so I expect that Underdog might roll out some of these features or improvements in the future.

The reality is that our team has been using Underdog Fantasy across a myriad of contests and sports seasons for much of the last year. We’ve participated in small drafts, large best ball contests and a plethora of pick’em contests. We’ve deposited money and we’ve withdrawn money. Everything has been seamless.
Is everything perfect? Well, of course not! Underdog is still growing. For instance, we’d love to see Underdog improve its college football offering with some actual player cards that include photos. But, hey we’re talking small stuff here.

Best ball tournaments aren’t necessarily something that haven’t been around, but Underdog has indeed taken these huge contests to another level both with the user interface and app quality, but of course, the huge prize pools that get a lot of attention.
The season long, big prize pool contests are incredibly fun. Here’s how it works:
- Draft your roster before the season starts. This might mean the NFL season, the MLB season, the PGA majors season, whatever.
- The contest is divided into elimination rounds. In the NFL, it’s often the first 14 weeks of the regular season. In the PGA, it’s the first major. Because these contests offer huge prize pool money that is concentrated to the top winners, you have to make it through a few rounds and try to get into the final round.
- The best ball mechanism means that you don’t have to set your roster, or worry about trades or waiver wire pick ups. The best scoring people on your team count each week, or each game. It’s simple.
- You can begin layering in some advanced strategy by deploying multiple entries in a single contest. Some of the large contests allow you to enter as many as 150 entries.

Battle Royale Daily Fantasy Draft

When you enter the Battle Royale contest, you will participate in a snake draft against a group of other users, usually anywhere from six to 12 users. But, you won’t just compete against the group you are drafting against. You’re competing against every user in every group for that given period of time.
For example, my first Battle Royale draft was for a night of Thursday night NBA action. We had to pick six players in a snake draft, and there were six users in our draft. The difference here is that I’m not just battling six users. I’m battling over 5,000 entrants into this contest, and at $5 entry per user, there’s a lot of prize money at stake. In fact, the first place winner gets $5,000. Top 10 finishers all make over $150 in prize money and over 500 top finishers make at least $10. The next 500 or so get their money back. So, it’s pretty hard to make BIG money, but it’s not crazy hard to make a little money. Fun, right?

One of the interesting notes here is that there were only four NBA games on this Thursday night, so you might be surprised at some of the players you start drafting. Also, you’re drafting multiple people from the same team. Perhaps this makes it more fun, because now you can watch a game potentially with multiple players that will impact your ability to win some cash.
Tips for your first Battle Royale draft:
- Make sure you understand the point scoring. On this NBA draft, I didn’t realize until a few picks in that steals counted for more points than I realized.
- The draft goes quick! When it starts, it moves quick and you might struggle to keep up. Get a feel for who you want before it begins.
- Go with a very small entry fee for your first draft, so you don’t risk much money on your first go-around. Use it as a learning experience.
Regular Daily Fantasy Drafts
Where Battle Royale drafts are daily fantasy drafts where you compete against a much larger group of individuals for the chance at higher dollar amounts, Underdog Fantasy also offers a number of more standard daily fantasy drafts where you compete against just a handful of people. In fact, I did a number of head-to-head NBA drafts. A head-to-head draft gives you the chance to basically double your entry money (minus approximately 10% rake). So, if it’s a $25 entry, you can win something like $45 if you win. If you lose, you get nothing.
To get to know the Underdog regular fantasy draft, I participated in some head-to-head NBA contests. In these contests, I went back and forth with my opponent in drafting six NBA players for the night’s action. Each of us picked six NBA players. It takes only a couple minutes.
As I played a few of these contests, the only thing that gets a little repetitive is the fact that you’re kind of selecting the same players over and over. Think about it… with only two teams with six players each, that’s 12 players. So, essentially every contest involves teams that have a mix of mostly the same players: Luka Doncic, LeBron James, Giannis, etc. Depending on who has the better night a bit randomly, that will determine the winner. Because you never go beyond an obvious group of top NBA players, you don’t really have a chance to demonstrate any deeper knowledge. In football, you have more variance with the output of top players and can lean more into the matchups, so I see this as less of an issue on NFL daily fantasy in this kind of format. But, I like NBA because there is nearly nightly action.
With that said, it’s still super fun to have some stakes involved in the nightly NBA action. You can likely take your gameplay to the next level by layering in some knowledge and data around the weakest defensive teams, which teams might get cooked regularly by a dynamic, scoring guard, etc. And consider the teams that rebound really poorly. This might help you beef up your rebounding stats.
All in all, these contests are incredibly simple, super easy to get started with, and definitely a great way to dip your toes in the water of daily fantasy.
Important Note:
As I was getting used to the Underdog platform, I entered a daily fantasy two player NBA matchup. I sat there for a minute and nobody entered the contest. So I left, and joined another. Nobody entered for a minute, and so I left again, and shut the app off. A few minutes later, I got a notification from Underdog that my draft was about to start! I didn’t realize that once you enter, you’re in, even if you leave. So I completed the draft. Then I got another notification saying my draft was about to start! If you remember, I entered two drafts casually and left both. Well, I was locked into both. So without realizing it, I had committed to two NBA drafts for the same day. Be aware that if you enter the contest, you’re in.
Underdog Pick’em Contests
As someone who kind of exited the daily fantasy space a few years ago after the big wave, it’s the pick’em contests that pulled me back in to Underdog Fantasy. These contests are quite similar to prop bets, and more closely resemble actual sports betting than anything else in fantasy.
There are two types of pick’em contests on Underdog Fantasy. Higher/lower pick’ems (which resemble over/under player prop bets in sports betting) and Rivals. Regardless of the type, you have to combine at least two picks and as many as five. The more you combine, the higher the multiplier or potential payout.
Higher/Lower
On higher/lower pick’ems, you are making a pick on an individual player and whether they will go over or under a specific stat total. For example, you might pick that Lebron James will score over or under 28.5 points against the Clippers in tonight’s game.

Rivals
In Rivals picks, you make a pick between two players around a specific stat category with a “spread” applied to one of them to even out the odds a bit. In the screenshot to the right, you can see you are picking between Jalen Hurts +37.5 rushing yards vs. his teammate Miles Sanders. If you pick Hurts, you think he’s going to rush for at least 37.5 more yards than Sanders.
Multipliers

The interface is really nice. Although, I’d like to see headshots on the college football pick’ems soon! New users can navigate this pretty easily.
