Hugh Freeze to the NFL?

Don’t let your blood pressure get too high on this one.

In a report by CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze is mentioned as a candidate for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching job.

The team is likely targeting former Giants (and Jaguars) head coach Tom Coughlin for the job, but Freeze is also mentioned as a candidate the team would like to speak with. Here’s the snippet:

Besides Coughlin, league sources said the Jaguars are likely to reach out to former head coaches like Josh McDaniels (Patriots offensive coordinator) and Mike Smith (Buccaneers defensive coordinator). Sources said Hughes has been high on Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who has not been an NFL head coach but will be widely pursued for openings next month, and several college coaches, including Hugh Freeze of Ole Miss. Caldwell spoke about considering college coaches during his news conference last week following the firing of Gus Bradley.

The Jaguars fired head coach Gus Bradley on December 18 after being 14–48 in three seasons. Since 2007, the Jaguars have a record of 41-101.

It’s unlikely Freeze would be interested in this position, because he seems to love recruiting and helping mold college players into men, but it’s an interesting scenario that he’s even being mentioned as a coach of interest.

Freeze’s rise from the high school ranks has been very quick, and he’s had a good amount of success everywhere he’s been. However, Freeze hasn’t coached in the NFL before.

Ole Miss’ 5-7 year is Freeze’s only losing season during his collegiate head coaching career.
