Missouri went the classic route for its helmet of choice for Saturday’s homecoming game against Idaho in a move that will likely make traditionalists smile.

The Tigers, who previously unveiled the uniform, will don the “Block M” lids for the 11 a.m. local time kickoff against the Vandals.

According to a 2012 article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, then-coach Gary Pinkel traded the “Block M” helmet for a Tiger head in part because studies showed “Mizzou” and the Tiger head were the most “distinct” icons.

Pinkel added that those logos were more accepted by potential recruits. The Tigers previously wore the “Block M” helmets for four decades.

Pinkel noted the program’s success in the 1960s, and added, “I have great respect for everything (that’s happened) here, but I’m going to do the right thing for the University of Missouri, not what’s popular. As long as you win enough, that takes care of itself.”

The 1-5 Tigers are trying to snap a five-game losing streak as the only nonconference game in the SEC on Saturday. Idaho is 2-4 and coming off a loss against Appalachian State.
