There’s already been one coaching change in the SEC this season, with Florida parting ways with coach Jim McElwain on Sunday.

With Ole Miss playing the 2017 season under interim coach Matt Luke, there will likely be two jobs that will be open at the end of the regular season.

However, as many as five other jobs could potentially come open, which would have half the conference looking for a new coach before 2018.

On Wednesday, Rivals.com writer Mike Farrell ranked the top-five SEC hot seats, starting with the obvious No. 1 in Tennessee’s Butch Jones. Here’s a selection of what he had to say about each coach:

  1. Butch Jones, Tennessee: “There is zero chance Jones is back as the head coach of the Vols next year, so why are we prolonging the agony here?”
  2. Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M: “When your AD is on record putting you squarely on the Hot Seat, you have to top this list and after last weekend’s performance against Mississippi State, the coaching strategy of Sumlin is once again under scrutiny.”
  3. Bret Bielema, Arkansas: “Arkansas has gone 3-9, 7-6, 8-5 and 7-6 in four full seasons under Bielema and will likely finish below .500 this season. It’s time for a change.”
  4. Gus Malzahn, Auburn: “Don’t be fooled by Auburn’s 6-2 record and 4-1 conference mark. Some bad losses could be coming.”
  5. Barry Odom, Mizzou: “But a 7-13 record and 2-10 in the SEC is pretty bad and Missouri has taken zero steps forward on defense, his forte, this season.”

Jones could be gone as soon as this weekend, but that’s not a given. The other jobs, on the other hand, will likely be safe until the end of the year.

Things change quickly in the SEC, though, as the Florida situation showed, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens moving forward.
